Sweden to Send Patriot Systems to Poland
On Tuesday, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson stated that his country will send Patriot air defense systems into eastern Poland. Their role is to shield a NATO logistics hub used to move weapons to Ukraine. The mission starts in December and involves roughly 100 personnel drawn from the air defense unit based in Halmstad. Sweden is taking over from a Dutch contingent that currently runs the Patriot systems. Officials have not revealed how many Patriot launchers will be dispatched.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5][S6][S7][S8]
A week earlier, Sweden had already said it would send Gripen fighter jets to Poland to take part in NATO's airspace patrol mission. According to Kristersson, the aim behind both sending the Gripen aircraft and stationing the Patriot systems is to safeguard the NATO logistics hub in Poland, which sits at an airport.[S1]
Context: Rising Tensions and Russian Threats
The previous month, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, pointing to unnamed intelligence services, stated that Russia was preparing "hybrid" attacks with drones and missiles targeting nations that back Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin said a week ago that Russia has no plans to attack anyone, yet should it face aggression, it would be left with no option but to react.[S1]
