A Record-Breaking Film Returns to Theaters
Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the highest-grossing film ever at the domestic box office and the third-highest worldwide, is being prepared for a re-release, according to sources. The reported version would carry additional footage, among it material featuring Rosario Dawson's character Claire Temple. Dawson has said in interviews that she filmed a scene for the movie which was ultimately removed. Sources indicate further surprises are planned for the extra material.[S1]
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland, the film remains in theaters worldwide. Its global gross stood at $2.495 billion as of yesterday, with $950.7 million of that total earned in North America. It also ranks as Sony's biggest release ever, having overtaken 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, which took in $1.92 billion, several weeks ago.[S1]
Disney's Encore Sets the Template
The re-release talk follows Disney's strong performance last weekend with Avengers: Endgame: Encore, a reissue from the Russo brothers that collected $86 million globally, including $26 million domestically. That run lifted the film's lifetime total to $2.885 billion, keeping it second on the all-time list behind Avatar at $2.92 billion. The Encore reissue served as a promotional push for Marvel Studios' Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release on December 18.[S1]
The extra footage in Encore varied by format. Viewers who bought tickets in Disney's certified premium large-format tier, InfinityVision, received six minutes and 17 seconds of additional Doomsday material, while those on other screens got two minutes and 6 seconds. Avengers: Endgame originally ran 3 hours and 1 minute; Brand New Day currently runs 2 hours and 25 minutes.[S1]
Timing and the All-Time Race
No date has been set for the Brand New Day re-release. Analysts expect Sony would seek premium large-format screens during a quieter period on the release calendar. The studio previously brought No Way Home back over Labor Day weekend in 2022, earning $9.3 million domestically, and in 2002 paired Sam Raimi's original Spider-Man with Men in Black II for a Labor Day double feature.[S1]
The worldwide gap between Brand New Day and Avengers: Endgame stands at $389.7 million, leaving the contest for the all-time crown unresolved. Separately, Holland and Zendaya appeared this summer in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey for Universal, which has reached $1.75 billion worldwide and ranks as that studio's highest-grossing film. Sony did not respond to a request for comment.[S1]
