Musk's record midterm spending

Elon Musk has emerged as the largest political donor in the 2026 US midterm elections, directing roughly $366 million to political committees and campaigns in support of conservative candidates and right-wing causes. Since July alone, the world's wealthiest individual has contributed over $276 million to politics, marking one of the fastest spending surges in US political history. He is focusing on pivotal races that will decide control of the US Senate. The New York Times was first to report these figures, which are set to appear in a federal filing on Thursday.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5][S6][S7][S8]

Musk's current political spending exceeds what he put into the 2024 presidential race, when he contributed almost $300 million to Donald Trump's re-election effort. This burst of donations also marks a shift from mid-last year, when Musk said he would pull back from making such large political contributions. Setbacks involving his so-called department of government efficiency (Doge), public backlash over his political influence, and a bitter split with Trump seemed to have cooled his engagement with Washington politics.[S1]

Where the money is going

According to Reuters and the New York Times, Musk's donations are distributed across multiple political action committees, including his own America Pac. His biggest single contribution was $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, a Super Pac dedicated to keeping Republicans in control of the Senate. Musk also directed $10 million to a Pac backing Ken Paxton, the Texas Republican Senate candidate running against Democratic nominee James Talarico in a closely watched and heated contest.[S1]

Among Musk's other major contributions are $76 million to America Pac, $20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund Republican Super Pac, and $10 million to the Republican Governors Association. In January, Musk also gave $10 million to Nate Morris, a Kentucky Republican Senate candidate who left the race in May after accepting an offer to serve as US ambassador to Colombia.[S1]

Messaging and influence

A portion of Musk's funding supports advertising and messaging efforts that emphasize anti-transgender themes and label Democratic candidates as radical socialists. Musk has frequently used X, the social media platform he owns, to go after his political rivals, spread election falsehoods, and criticize trans rights. Over the weekend, he shared a video from America Pac featuring Talarico's past remarks on gender, describing it as madness.[S1]

Musk's enormous spending ranks among the largest political donations in US history, yet it represents only a minuscule share of his nearly $1 trillion fortune. The $366 million in midterm contributions amounts to less than 0.04% of his net worth.[S1]
