Canada's Response

On Monday, Canada's Finance Ministry announced that its retaliatory tariffs on U.S. imports would start early Tuesday. These duties, reaching as high as 50%, will be applied to U.S. goods valued at C$27.6 billion (approximately $20 billion).[S1]

The tariffs cover a broad array of items, such as steel and aluminum, home appliances, farming equipment, pulp and paper, and electronic devices. This action comes after trade negotiations between the U.S. and Canada fell apart.[S1]

Background of the Dispute

Earlier in August, the U.S. levied tariffs up to 50% on roughly $20 billion of Canadian exports, including hockey sticks, furniture, honey, and wine. Canada's latest measures are a direct counter to those American tariffs.[S1]
