Record move for Sangare
Brentford have confirmed the signing of Mali midfielder Mamadou Sangare from Lens for a club-record fee. The 24-year-old has agreed a five-year contract, with the club holding an option for a further year. The club did not disclose the fee, but said it surpasses the £42.5m paid to sign Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth last summer. Reports put the fee at £39m or £41m. Sangare is Brentford's fourth summer signing after Jannik Schuster, Jaidon Anthony and Callum Wilson. The Bees open their Premier League campaign at home to Tottenham Hotspur on August 22. The club missed out on Conference League qualification on goal difference last season and will want to build on an impressive 2025-26 campaign under Keith Andrews.[S3][S5]
From Bamako to Brentford
Born in Bamako, Sangare began his career at Malian academy Yeelen Olympique before joining Red Bull Salzburg in 2020. He gained his first senior experience in Europe with Salzburg's feeder club FC Liefering, scoring once in 11 appearances during the 2020/21 campaign. He then had loan spells at Grazer AK, Zulte Waregem and TSV Hartberg, scoring five goals in 26 league games for Grazer AK in 2021/22 and making 46 league appearances across 18 months at Hartberg.[S2]
His form earned him a permanent move to Rapid Wien in July 2024. In his first season in Vienna, he made 44 appearances in all competitions, helping Rapid reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Conference League and finish fifth in the Austrian Bundesliga. After beginning the following campaign with Rapid, Sangare joined Lens in August 2025 and quickly became an important part of Pierre Sage's side.[S2]
At Lens, Sangare made 33 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and providing three assists. Lens finished second in Ligue 1 and won the Coupe de France for the first time in their history. He was selected in the UNFP Ligue 1 Team of the Year and received the Prix Marc-Vivien Foé, awarded to the best African player in the French top flight. In the cup final, he led his team in shots, touches and accurate passes, and won possession six times.[S2][S5]
Filling the midfield
Sangare will fill the void left by Jordan Henderson, who left Brentford as a free agent last month with an eye to joining Chelsea. Crystal Palace also considered a move for the Mali international, in a bid to reunite him with Pierre Sage, under whose management he won the Coupe de France and finished second in Ligue 1 last season. Brentford moved quickly to secure his signature.[S4][S6]
Head coach Keith Andrews said: "Mamadou is someone that we've tracked for quite some time. He's been on our radar and was a player we were really keen to bring in." Andrews praised his performances at Lens and for Mali, adding: "He's a player that adds to a really good midfield that we already have; he also adds qualities that we don't have." Sangare has 16 senior caps for Mali and played at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. He made 29 Ligue 1 appearances for Lens last season as the club finished just six points behind champions Paris Saint-Germain. Last season in Ligue 1, he won possession more times than any other midfielder, with 207, and ranked second for tackles and duels won. He will hope to make his debut next week when Brentford face Rennes in a pre-season friendly at Roazhon Park.[S1][S2][S4][S5][S6]
