A career set completed in Nagoya
Carlos Yulo, already a double Olympic champion, captured Asian Games floor gold in Nagoya, Japan, on Thursday with a score of 14.666. The win gives the Filipino gymnast a complete collection of Olympic, World, Asian and South-East Asian Games titles. He described himself as overwhelmed and said he could not yet process the result. Yulo became the only multiple Olympic gold medal-winner in Philippines history when he took floor and vault gold in Paris two years ago.[S1]
The 26-year-old, who stands 151cm (4ft 11in), is the first Philippines gymnast to win an Asian Games gold. He said the achievement felt like the Olympics to him, adding that it was his first Asian Games victory and that he was happy and excited to return home and share the blessing with people in the Philippines. He will attempt to add a second gold in Friday's vault final.[S1]
A familiar setting and a family presence
Yulo said competing in Japan felt like home because he spends much of his time training there and has grown comfortable performing in the country. He noted that the challenge is simply to perform well, and that his routine on Thursday came together. His brother Karl also competed in the floor exercise final, finishing seventh. Yulo said he planned to relax and enjoy Friday's competition while hoping for the best.[S1]
