India Clinch Fifth Asian Games Hockey Gold
India defeated Malaysia 5-1 in the men's hockey final at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya on Saturday, October 3, to win the gold medal and secure direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Captain Harmanpreet Singh opened the scoring with a penalty-corner conversion in the first quarter, but Malaysia equalised quickly through Shello Silverius, who controlled an aerial pass on the left and beat Suraj with a half-volley from a difficult angle in the 14th minute. The first quarter ended 1-1.[S1][S2]
India regained the lead in the 23rd minute when Jugraj Singh converted a penalty corner with a well-placed drag-flick, taking a 2-1 advantage into half-time. In the third quarter, India continued to control possession but struggled to create clear openings until they were awarded a penalty stroke in the 43rd minute after a deflection from Mandeep Singh hit the body of a Malaysian post defender. Hardik Singh converted the stroke, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to make it 3-1.[S1][S2]
In the fourth quarter, India extended their lead in the 55th minute when Abhishek made a run down the right and the ball reached Shilanand Lakra, who finished from close range after a deflection. Two minutes later, Harmanpreet Singh converted another penalty corner to complete the 5-1 scoreline. India comfortably controlled the closing stages to seal the gold medal and successfully defend their Asian Games men's hockey title.[S1][S2]
Historic Double Gold and Medal Tally
The victory is significant as India have successfully defended their Asian Games men's hockey gold for the first time, while also claiming their fifth Asian Games hockey gold medal, following victories in 1966, 1998, 2014 and 2022. The 2026 edition was also historic as both India's men's and women's hockey teams won gold medals. Hockey became only the third Indian team sport, after kabaddi and cricket, to achieve a double-gold finish at the Asian Games.[S1][S2]
The win took India's medal tally at the Games to 85, including 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze medals. India had reached the final after a thrilling 4-3 semifinal victory over Pakistan, with Abhishek scoring the decisive goal in the final minute. Goal scorers for India in the final were Harmanpreet Singh (2), Jugraj Singh, Hardik Singh and Shilanand Lakra.[S1][S2]
