Strikes on Houthi Strongholds
Early on Sunday, Yemen's armed forces stated they were launching operations against the Iran-aligned Houthis in Sanaa, the capital, and in Saada, the group's main stronghold. A spokesperson for the armed forces, which back the internationally recognised government, said the strikes were aimed at what he called vital targets, offering no additional information. Earlier, the Houthi-run Al Masirah TV said Sanaa had been attacked and attributed it to Saudi Arabia. Saudi officials did not immediately confirm this.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5]
Truce Collapses as Hostilities Resume
Fighting between the Iran-backed Houthis and forces loyal to the Saudi-backed government had mostly ceased following a 2022 truce, yet clashes have reignited as a consequence of the wider Iran-United States war. Combat restarted this year after the Houthis announced a naval blockade of Saudi Arabia in July and started striking Saudi land and vessels, while Houthi fighters also seized significant territory along Yemen's Red Sea coastline. Saudi Arabia has hit back with air raids in Yemen and supported government troops attempting to push the Houthis back.[S1]
Operations in Taiz
Separately, Yemeni forces conducted 71 operations against the Houthis in Taiz, according to a headline from Al Arabiya English. No further details were provided in the available evidence.[S6]
