Blaze Engulfs Apartment Building
A fire broke out Thursday at the Windsor Lake Apartment Homes in Woodridge, Illinois, injuring four people, including a firefighter. The Darien-Woodridge Fire District reported that crews arrived to find heavy flames and that the building's roof eventually collapsed. The fire was fed by natural gas, according to the district. ComEd and Nicor Gas were summoned to shut off utilities, and Nicor confirmed it assisted firefighters at the scene.[S1]
Firefighters used a drone launched from their mobile command center to gain a better view of the flames, while also working to evacuate nearby residents. Dozens of people living in the building were affected. Four individuals, including the firefighter, were taken to a local hospital and officials said the victims are in good condition.[S1]
Displacement and Investigation
Village officials announced that a temporary shelter is available for displaced Windsor Lakes Apartment residents, directing those in need to contact the American Red Cross at 1-800-733-2767. The Woodridge Police Department is expected to provide an update on Friday.[S1]
Woodridge Fire Protection District Chief Jimmy Lahanis said the role of natural gas in the fire appeared evident, but the actual cause will remain undetermined until investigators can complete their work at the scene.[S1]
