Envoys arrive in Kyiv after Moscow talks
On Sunday, American envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner made their inaugural trip to Kyiv as part of a fresh initiative to broker peace. They arrived by rail from the Polish frontier, following a Saturday meeting in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The envoys were welcomed at the station by high-ranking Ukrainian officials and later met by President Volodymyr Zelensky at a ceremony in St. Sophia Square. Zelensky said on social media that Ukraine is ready for a constructive conversation and interested in bringing the end of the war closer, emphasizing the need for peace and security guarantees. Pause in strikes enables visit
To facilitate the weekend visits, both Russia and Ukraine pledged to refrain from aerial assaults on each other's capitals, offering a temporary lull in those cities, though no comprehensive ceasefire exists. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov indicated that Putin ordered a three-day halt on strikes against Kyiv in connection with the envoys' visit. A White House official stated that detailed plans for subsequent actions to conclude the war were the focus of the Moscow discussions, with those steps to be revealed in the coming weeks. The official also noted that representatives from the National Security Council, State Department, and Treasury Department participated. Putin's foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov characterized the talks as substantive, constructive, extremely candid, and trusting, marking their eighth meeting.[S2][S3]
Ushakov added that the dialogue extended beyond the invasion, covering economic matters and potentially significant joint ventures between Russia and the US in depth. At the outset, Putin asked Kushner and Witkoff to convey his warm regards and appreciation to President Trump, acknowledging the Ukraine situation as complex.
