Swift and Madonna Lead the Night
Taylor Swift and Madonna were the standout winners at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards. Swift received the video of the year award and was also honored with the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors, presented by Dakota Johnson, who appears in Swift's new video for Patient Zero, which debuted during the broadcast. Swift also won best direction for Opalite. In her acceptance speech, she credited her fans for her love of making videos and dedicated her video of the year prize to Dolly Parton, calling her the ultimate showgirl.[S1]
Madonna had a remarkable night, securing seven awards in total. She and Sabrina Carpenter won best collaboration shortly after opening the show with a performance of Bring Your Love. Madonna mentioned that when she first contacted Carpenter about collaborating, it took five days for a response. Madonna also won artist of the year, and in her acceptance speech she said she had spent the past year and a half finding herself, believing in herself, and creating the music she wanted to make, which she described as the definition of being an artist. Lisa took home the best pop prize for "Dream," while Sienna Spiro earned best new artist honors. Snoop Dogg served as host of the event. Chuck D handed Nirvana the Video Vanguard Award, which Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear accepted. Kacey Musgraves paid tribute to Dolly Parton, and Raye, Sombr, and Teddy Swims honored George Michael. The lineup of performers featured Gener8ion, Yung Lean, Lisa, Shaboozey, Gunna, and Sienna Spiro.[S1]

The 2026 VMAs took place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and aired live on CBS and MTV, streaming on Paramount+ in the U.S. The show was produced by Gunpowder & Sky, with Van Toffler as producer. Toffler described the event as a kick-ass, fast-paced show and an atypical awards show that would be a fun ride.
