Sharks Lock Up Warsofsky
The San Jose Sharks signed head coach Ryan Warsofsky to a multiyear contract extension on Thursday, general manager Mike Grier announced. The team did not disclose the term or financial details, per its policy. Warsofsky, who was named coach on June 13, 2024, had been entering the final year of his contract. At 37 or 38 years old depending on the source, Warsofsky is the youngest active head coach in the NHL. He now begins his third season as head coach and fifth year overall with the organization. In two seasons at the helm, he has compiled a 59-85-20 record.[S1][S2][S3]
A 19-Win Turnaround
Warsofsky's first season did not go as planned, with the Sharks finishing with just 52 points, the worst record in the NHL. However, the team improved dramatically in his second campaign, posting a 35-41-6 record and finishing 11th in the Western Conference. That marked a 19-win improvement from the previous year. San Jose remained in playoff contention late in the season before ultimately finishing fifth in the Pacific Division, just four points back of the final wild-card spot.[S1][S2][S3]
A major factor in the turnaround was the emergence of 2025 first-overall pick Macklin Celebrini, who set a franchise record with 115 points last season, surpassing Joe Thornton's 114 points from 2006-07. Celebrini finished fourth in the league in scoring. Warsofsky's Winning Pedigree
Before joining San Jose, Warsofsky built a strong coaching resume in the American Hockey League. He served as head coach for the Charlotte Checkers and the Chicago Wolves, winning Calder Cups with the Wolves in 2019 and 2022. He also coached the United States at the 2025 IIHF Men's World Championship, leading the team to its first gold medal in the event in 92 years. A native of North Marshfield, Massachusetts, Warsofsky was hired as a Sharks assistant in 2022 and promoted to head coach after David Quinn was let go following the 2023-24 campaign.[S2][S3]
