Ottawa breaks open a tied game in the second

The Senators ended a two-game losing streak and pulled level with the club's best October, a nine-win mark first reached in 2007-08. The victory came in San Jose on Saturday and improved Ottawa to 9-5-1, though the team had dropped the opening two contests of a five-game trip that carries on in Anaheim on Sunday.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5]

Cozens struck first at 13:25 of the opening period, and Michael Misa answered for the Sharks at 16:06 with his third goal of the season. The Senators then pulled away with three goals in the middle frame: Batherson put them ahead at 5:04, and Stützle and Greig followed with markers 1:23 apart near the midpoint of the period.[S1]

Batherson, Greig and Pinto all found the net for Ottawa, while Ersson turned aside 21 shots to claim his first win of the campaign after entering the night at 0-3-1. The Senators have been playing without the injured Linus Ullmark. At the other end, Alex Nedeljkovic made 30 saves for San Jose.[S1]

Stützle closes October one goal short of a team mark

Stützle wrapped up October with nine goals and 12 assists, pushing his franchise record for points in the month to 21. He ended one goal behind Bob Kudelski's club record for October, which has stood since 1993.[S1]

Batherson stretched his point streak to seven games while scoring his ninth goal of the season. Cozens has now scored in consecutive outings, adding one after netting twice in Thursday's 6-5 overtime defeat at Los Angeles.[S1]

The Senators evened the two-game season series after falling 6-2 at home on Oct. 22. San Jose slipped to 7-7-1 and has now lost three of its last four. Ottawa travels to Anaheim on Sunday night, while the Sharks host the Flames on Monday night.[S1][S4][S5]
