A header decides a tight match at the Monumental
River took a 1-0 win over Racing at the Monumental in the 14th round of the Clausura's Zone B, a result that improved its position both in the group table and in the annual standings. Lautaro Rivero scored the only goal with a header, returning to the starting lineup in place of the suspended Lucas Martínez Quarta. The home side extended its recovery under Leonardo Ponzio and now turns to the Superclásico against Boca in the next round.[S1][S2]
The first half built slowly. Racing needed points and a convincing performance, while River struggled to create danger in the opposing area, and the match was further disrupted by an injury to Aníbal Moreno after 15 minutes. Play was largely confined to midfield for the opening half hour, with little to separate the sides until Ángel Correa delivered a precise cross for Rivero to head past Facundo Cambeses in the 33rd minute.[S1][S2]
A disallowed goal and Racing's fading challenge
Energized by the goal and the home crowd, River thought it had doubled the lead before the break when Correa finished a rebound, but referee Leandro Rey Hilfer, after a VAR review, ruled out the goal for an offside by Gonzalo Montiel in the build-up. After the interval Racing saw more of the ball, knowing a defeat at the Monumental would end its playoff chances, and pushed forward cautiously. River, however, had the clearest chances on the counter, with Correa denied a second by Cambeses.[S1]
Both coaches made changes, and the substitutions suited River better, with young players Juan Cruz Meza and Lautaro Pereyra adding fresh energy. River's failure to convert more chances and Racing's flat display left the score at 1-0, a margin that understated the home side's control. The result confirms River's strong run: it has lost only one of its last 12 matches.[S1]
Table impact and the road to the Superclásico
River now sits fourth in Zone B with 23 points and has climbed to fifth in the annual standings, close to the places that lead to the 2027 Copa Libertadores. Racing's loss leaves it 13th with 12 points and out of the playoffs in a season to forget. The next fixture for River is the Superclásico against Boca in round 15, an interzonal match of the Clausura scheduled for November 1 at 15:00 at La Bombonera. Racing will host Aldosivi in Avellaneda.[S1][S2]
The match also drew attention off the pitch: former River coach Marcelo Gallardo watched from a box alongside his son Matías, a current Instituto de Córdoba player. The referee was Leandro Rey Hilfer, with Felipe Viola on VAR, and the game was broadcast by TNT Sports. River's lineup featured Santiago Beltrán in goal and Correa and Thiago Almada in attack, while Racing started with Cambeses and Adrián Martínez up front.[S1][S2]
