Vatican reports a good night and normal recovery
Pope Leo XIV passed a good night at the Gemelli Polyclinic, got up and ate breakfast, the Holy See Press Office said in a statement released Thursday. The pontiff is recovering from surgery performed on Tuesday to completely remove a pulmonary adenocarcinoma. The brief update, distributed via the press office's Telegram channel, offered the first news of the day on the pope's condition.[S1][S2]
On Wednesday, doctors Luigi Carbone and Stéfano Margaritora said the pope had undergone the scheduled blood tests and chest X-ray after the operation. The results confirmed a normal post-operative course, with values within normal parameters for the type of surgery performed. The medical team also reported that the Holy Father had begun respiratory physiotherapy and had started walking around his room, and had resumed his usual diet, taking breakfast and lunch.[S1][S2]
Convalescence and suspended audiences
The pope also concelebrated Mass on Wednesday afternoon in a room specially set up for that purpose on the tenth floor of the hospital. The Vatican has said the expected post-operative period is seven days, but has not yet specified how long the recovery might be extended. While he remains under medical supervision, the pontiff's audiences are suspended until Tuesday, October 20.[S1][S2]
