Thirty roles to go as aquarium reshapes its structure
The National Aquarium intends to remove 30 positions beginning Jan. 1, 2027, the Baltimore nonprofit said this week, describing the move as part of a strategic restructuring. Alongside the reductions, job titles, duties and the way departments are organized will be revised. A limited number of new roles are expected to be created, but the aquarium did not disclose how many.[S1][S2][S3]
The organization did not answer questions about the plan when contacted on Saturday. Details beyond the announced headcount and start date therefore remain limited, including which departments will be affected and how the new positions will fit into the revised structure.[S1]
Leadership points to costs rising faster than revenue
Jennifer Driban, the aquarium's president and chief executive, attributed the restructuring to financial pressure shared by many organizations in the region and around the country. She said materials, services and utilities have all become more expensive, while growth in operating revenue has lagged behind those increases.[S1]
