A third season on a different track
Apple TV and Legendary Television are discussing a renewal of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters for a third season, and the plan would steer the series in a fresh direction. The new run would draw on additional Titans from Legendary's Monsterverse, expanding the creature roster beyond what the first two seasons used. No renewal has been finalized, and the talks are described as ongoing rather than concluded.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5][S6][S7][S8]
The shift would extend to the people running the show. A search is under way for a new showrunner and a new writing staff, who would succeed the creative team that handled Seasons 1 and 2. That group was headed by Chris Black, who served as showrunner and executive producer and who co-created Monarch alongside Matt Fraction, an executive producer in the first season.[S1][S4][S5][S6][S7]
Word of the possible overhaul arrived roughly half a year after Season 2 completed its Apple TV run on May 1. The timing places the discussions well after the season's finale and suggests the streamer and the studio have had time to assess the show's performance before deciding how to continue it.[S1]
Who produces the Monsterverse series
Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures hold executive producer credits on Monarch. Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita represent Toho Co., Ltd., which owns the Godzilla character, in the same role. The second season's executive producers also included Chris Black, Jen Roskind, Matt Shakman, Lawrence Trilling and Andrew Colville.[S1]
Legendary obtained the Monsterverse rights from Toho and has a multi-series arrangement with Apple TV. That pact covers Monarch: Legacy of Monsters as well as an untitled spinoff built around Young Lee Shaw, in which Wyatt Russell returns as Colonel Lee Shaw. Harold is the showrunner of that spinoff and, with Tunnell through Safehouse Pictures, is developing further franchise entries.[S1]
The spinoff's cast includes Millie Brady, Pilou Asbaek, Corey Stoll, Ralph Ineson, Nyasha Hatendi, Connie Nielsen and Stana Katic. Harold, Tunnell and Russell executive produce with Andy Goddard, Kyle Bradstreet, Jim Skotchdopole, Max Borenstein, Chris Black, Alex Boden and Toho's Matsuoka and Arita. JD Dillard directs and executive produces.[S1]
