Beirut's demands go to Tampa
Lebanon's presidency said in a post on X on Saturday that a Lebanese military delegation will carry Beirut's demand for an end to Israeli attacks in Lebanon to a trilateral meeting scheduled for October 20 in Tampa, Florida. The announcement set out the government's position ahead of the gathering, which brings the two sides together with US involvement.[S1][S2][S3][S4]
The delegation's trip follows a series of direct exchanges between Lebanon and Israel in recent months, all aimed at halting hostilities. Those contacts take place against the backdrop of a war that broke out on March 2 between Israel and Hezbollah, the Lebanese armed group, and that was set off by the broader conflict in the region.[S1]
A deal whose core exchange remains unfulfilled
A US-brokered understanding reached through the Israel-Lebanon talks committed Beirut to disarming Hezbollah, a step that was meant to lead to Israeli troops pulling back from Lebanon in stages. That sequence has not taken hold. Hezbollah has declined to give up its weapons while Israeli forces stay on Lebanese territory, and Israel has kept up strikes on southern Lebanon.[S1]
The result is a standoff in which each side's condition is the other's action. Beirut's demand in Tampa therefore centers on stopping the Israeli attacks, while the disarmament pledge that was supposed to unlock a withdrawal remains contested on the ground.[S1]
