Attack at the Monastery
One person was killed and four more were hurt when an assailant attacked people at a Catholic convent in southeastern Poland on Thursday, according to officials. Officers were called to the abbey grounds in Jarosław at roughly 9:30 a.m. local time, which is 07:30 GMT. Those stabbed included four men and one woman. All were brought to a hospital, where three of the men were first described as badly hurt. Police subsequently reported that one of the men had died, as PAP, the Polish news agency, stated.[S1][S2]
The suspect, a 31-year-old foreign national, was detained at the scene. Police said they had been alerted to the stabbing by a Ukrainian citizen. Authorities are investigating the exact circumstances and the motive behind the attack.[S1]
Suspect and Victims Identified
Bożena Harasz-Woloszyn of the District Prosecutor's Office in Przemyśl stated that the deed was carried out by a 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen who had come into Poland from Germany the same day. According to her, the perpetrator wielded a knife taken from a kitchen at the site, targeting four men and one woman, among them a priest who was inside a confessional. She said three of those attacked belonged to the clergy and two were laypeople, and she confirmed that one person was dead while two others remained in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.[S2]
Sister Barbara Dendor told state broadcaster TVP Info that Father Stanisław had passed away and Father Marek was in serious condition, noting that there were other casualties but further details were not available. She described the scene upon her arrival as total panic, with young people who had come out of the center witnessing the attack and exclaiming about a madman.[S2]
Community in Mourning
Marcin Nazarewicz, the mayor of Jarosław, announced at a press conference that mourning would be observed through the end of the week. The assault has shaken the nearby residents and the Benedictine Sisters monastery, while investigators keep looking into the circumstances.[S2]
