A Historic Victory
On Thursday, Justus Kelley, who represented Virginia, secured the Miss USA 2026 title at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami. She made history as the first married woman and mother to win, and at 31, she is also the first contestant in her 30s to take the crown. Kelley, who is a foster parent to two children, runs a nonprofit, and has authored a children's book, outperformed 50 other contestants. Miss USA 2025 Audrey Eckert passed the crown to her. The Competition and New Rules
Fifty-one women competed in swimsuit, evening gown, and interview rounds. The top 20 advanced to the swimsuit round, and the top 10 to evening gown. The final five answered a question. This year introduced a new judging category called 'commercial appeal,' evaluating contestants' potential to attract sponsorships. Host Ian Ziering explained that Miss USA should make the world want to work with her. For the first time, fans could vote during the finals, with a 12-minute window to cast votes online. These votes were combined with judges' scores, though the weight was unclear. Miss Montana led the fan vote but did not make the top 10.[S1]
A New Era for Miss USA
The Miss USA organization has faced turmoil, with three different leaders since 2020 amid scandals including rigging accusations and lawsuits. The CW network dropped the finals from its schedule in August, citing a contractual issue. The pageant was streamed live on the Queen Beauty Network, as in 2025.[S1]
Kelley, a thrifting enthusiast, wore secondhand clothing throughout the competition. She shared that she found a suit at Goodwill for $9.99 that impressed judges, demonstrating that one doesn't need to spend a fortune to shine on stage.[S1]
