The exchange highlights how live comedy can amplify misogynistic language and the pressure on public figures to challenge it, especially when broadcast to a national audience.

Gillis's monologue draws criticism

Shane Gillis hosted Saturday Night Live on Saturday and sparked backlash with a joke about women at the gym. He told the live audience that he had not been to a gym in a long time and did not know that women now dress in a certain way, using a derogatory term. He went on to describe neon shorts and wrinkles around the buttocks, adding that people are not allowed to look because they are being filmed and he appears in the background of many TikToks.[S1]

Nwodim's Instagram response

Ego Nwodim, who used to perform on Saturday Night Live, responded with humor on Monday. She uploaded a gym selfie to her Instagram Story, labeling it "Whore reporting for duty." A second Story showed her post-exercise food, with the note "Getting my 30 grams of protein in after heauxing." Nwodim spent seven seasons in the SNL cast, appearing from 2018 through 2025, and exited before season 51 began.[S1]

Dan Levy also condemns the joke

Dan Levy, who helped create Schitt's Creek and starred in it, likewise took aim at Gillis's material. Writing on Instagram, he argued that a woman in short gym shorts is not a whore, whereas a man who labels her one is a misogynist, and those two things are not the same. He said he could not believe such a remark aired on live national television, and called on more men to object, since staying quiet has fostered a culture where women face sexual assault and it gets debated instead of prosecuted.[S1]
