A Monumental Addition to a Small Village
In Poland's rural village of Konotopie, a colossal 55.6-meter statue of the Virgin Mary has been officially revealed, surpassing Rio's Christ the Redeemer in height. It stands atop a 15-meter pedestal, although a Philippine counterpart reaches 98 meters. This massive concrete figure is now Europe's tallest Virgin Mary statue.[S1][S3]
Bishop Krzysztof Wętkowski consecrated the statue on the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Rose petals were dropped by helicopters circling the 55.6-metre concrete figure, which depicts Mary with open arms, symbolizing a call to look upwards to God and heaven.[S1]

Roman and Grażyna Karkosik, a wealthy Polish couple, commissioned the project as a gesture of thanks to God after Roman Karkosik recovered from an illness. Karkosik, a successful entrepreneur with interests in the Warsaw Stock Exchange and manufacturing, is among Poland's richest individuals.[S3][S4]
