Inflation Edges Up in September

According to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, Egypt's annual headline inflation climbed to 12.8 percent in September 2026, compared with 12.7 percent the month before. The agency reported that the general consumer price index stood at 294.2 points for September 2026, a month-on-month gain of 1.5 percent. The announcement was made in Cairo on October 10.[S1]

A separate report indicated that Egypt's annual urban inflation eased to 13.9 percent in September, offering a different measure of price pressures in the country.[S2]

Food, Housing, and Transport Drive Price Increases

Compared with September 2025, prices rose across multiple categories. Food and beverages increased by 7.9 percent, while housing, water, electricity, gas, and fuel surged by 29.6 percent. Furnishings, household equipment, and routine household maintenance climbed 15.1 percent. Transport costs rose 21.3 percent, education fees increased 20 percent, and restaurants and hotels saw a 12.8 percent rise.[S1]
