Diagnosis and Surgery
Busy Philipps, recognized for her performances in 'Dawson's Creek' and 'Freaks and Geeks,' has revealed that she received a diagnosis of a grade 2 oligodendroglioma, an uncommon and slow-progressing brain tumor, in February. The finding emerged from a full-body MRI that she had arranged despite her primary care physician's initial discouragement. In early March, Philipps underwent a five-hour surgery to remove the 2.6-centimeter mass. Her neuro-oncologist, Dr. Alexandra Miller, noted that the tumor, while malignant, has the best prognosis among malignant gliomas. A month after the initial surgery, Philipps contracted a staphylococcus infection at the incision site, discovered during a Botox appointment. This led to a second surgery in April to clear the infection, which she described as a setback that left her feeling 'back to square one.'
