Production kicks off with first-look images

Filming has officially started on "Miami Vice '85," a reboot of the iconic 1980s detective show, and the first images of its two leads in character have been released. Michael B. Jordan appears as Ricardo Tubbs, while Austin Butler takes on the role of Sonny Crockett. The original series, which aired from 1984 to 1989, featured Don Johnson as Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Tubbs, two undercover police detectives working in Miami, Florida.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5][S6][S7][S8]

The film is directed by Joseph Kosinski, whose recent credits include "F1" and "Top Gun: Maverick." The cast also features Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo, Andrew Schulz, Edi Gathegi, Walton Goggins, André Holland and Michael Irby. "Miami Vice '85" is scheduled to hit theaters on May 19, 2028.[S1]

A return to the glamour and corruption of mid-80s Miami

The creative team says the new version will examine the allure and sleaze of Miami during the mid-1980s, taking cues from the original show's debut episode and its first season — a series credited with shaping culture and influencing style across fashion and moviemaking alike. Dan Gilroy penned the screenplay, working from characters Anthony Yerkovich devised for the television program. An earlier version of the script came from Eric Warren Singer.[S1]

Dylan Clark and Kosinski are producing the film. Sara Scott, executive vice president of production development, and Christina Hoffrogge, creative executive of production development, will oversee the project for Universal.[S1]

What's next for the stars

Michael B. Jordan, who took home best actor honors last year for "Sinners," is set to appear in "The Thomas Crown Affair" alongside Adria Arjona, a project he also helmed. Austin Butler's next role comes in A24's "Enemies," where he acts opposite Jeremy Allen White.[S1]
