A World Where Replicants Have Won
Showrunner Silka Luisa described the show's setting during the NYCC panel on Saturday night. The story takes place 50 years after Blade Runner 2049, in a world where the replicant uprising that had been building throughout the films has occurred and humans have been defeated. The creations have therefore surpassed their creators. Luisa said the series asks what happens when humanity's time as a species ends, placing 2099 at a junction where one species is ending and another is rising. She contrasted the first film's focus on mortality at a micro level—with Roy Batty and other replicants fighting for more life—with the show's macro-level question about whether mankind will accept its own loss and hold on to its humanity.[S1]
