A fast renewal after a strong debut
Prime Video has ordered a second season of Carrie, moving quickly on the Stephen King adaptation only two weeks after the first season arrived on Oct. 7. According to the streamer, the series held the top spot on the Amazon-owned service across more than 100 territories during its opening fortnight. The renewal keeps the story of Carrie White moving forward rather than closing with the prom.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5][S6][S7][S8]
Mike Flanagan, who wrote the adaptation of King's first novel, stays on as showrunner and executive producer for the new season. King also remains an executive producer. The two developed the first season together with Trevor Macy, and Flanagan directed four of its eight episodes; Kate Siegel, Axelle Carolyn, Kyra Sedgwick and Hiromi Kamata each directed one of the others.[S1]
What season one reimagined
The first season placed Carrie in a present-day public high school, where she arrives after her father's death while still closely monitored by her mother, played by Samantha Sloyan. In this version she faces a bullying scandal that spreads virally through her community, the pressures and casual cruelty of social media, and the emergence of telekinetic abilities that develop alongside her adolescence. Summer H. Howell plays Carrie.[S1]
The cast also includes Siena Agudong, Alison Thornton, Joel Oulette, Josie Totah, Arthur Conti, Thalia Dudek, Amber Midthunder and Matthew Lillard. Kate Siegel, Michael Trucco, Crystal Balint, Rahul Kohli, Tim Bagley and Heather Graham appeared in recurring roles.[S1]
Why the streamer is extending the story
Peter Friedlander, who leads global television at Amazon MGM Studios, said the show has reached both established King readers and a new audience that includes younger viewers and international subscribers, with especially strong performance among women. He described the response as evidence that Flanagan's reworking of the well-known material has wide reach, and said the company is eager to see where Flanagan and King take it.[S1]
Flanagan said that for five decades audiences have connected with Carrie White's story, and that from the outset the creative team envisioned a narrative extending well beyond the prom. He credited King's confidence and backing for the chance to explore what follows. King said he is eager for viewers to discover what lies ahead for Carrie White and described the plans he and Flanagan share as certain to be exciting.[S1]
