Verity Set for Strong Opening

The Amazon MGM thriller Verity, based on Colleen Hoover's best-selling novel, brought in $4.5 million from preview screenings. The film, featuring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, is projected to debut with $30 million to $35 million, which would place it at the top of the box office chart. If it achieves that, it will become Hathaway's third No. 1 film, following The Odyssey and The Devil Wears Prada 2.[S1]

Made for $40 million, Verity looks set to extend the run of successful films based on Hoover's books. Those earlier releases are 2024's It Ends With Us, 2025's Regretting You, and Reminders of Him, which arrived earlier this year. Among them, the Blake Lively-led It Ends With Us leads the pack, having opened to $50 million and taken $350 million globally. Verity is projected to finish second in that group, ahead of Reminders of Him's $17 million debut and Regretting You's $13.6 million launch.[S1]

In the film, Hathaway plays Verity Crawford, a reclusive author who cannot complete her latest novel after an accident. She and her husband, portrayed by Josh Hartnett, hire Lowen Ashleigh (Johnson) to finish the manuscript, but Lowen becomes entangled in a mystery filled with lies.[S1]

Digger Faces Uphill Battle

Alejandro González Iñárritu directs Tom Cruise in Digger, which is shaping up to be among 2026's weakest box office performers. Previews brought in just $1.2 million, and the opening weekend is forecast at $12 million to $15 million, far below its $125 million budget, which reports say climbed past $160 million. In the climate-themed thriller, Cruise plays an oil magnate trying to rescue the planet from environmental disaster. Critics have been unkind, yet Cruise and his collaborators have welcomed the response and urged audiences to form their own opinions.[S1]
