Swiatek Overcomes Slow Start to Advance

Iga Swiatek secured a place in the round of 16 at the Wuhan Open with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Magdalena Frech on Wednesday. The six-time major champion began sluggishly against her Polish compatriot, losing her serve early and falling behind 2-0. She then won six games in a row to take the opening set.[S1][S2][S3]

Swiatek maintained her dominance at the start of the second set, claiming four consecutive games before Frech finally held to make it 4-1. The seventh seed is competing in the WTA's 1,000-level tournament and recently reached the quarterfinals at the China Open in Beijing.[S1]

Next Opponent and Other Results

Swiatek will next face either Ashlyn Krueger or Lanlana Tararudee. She is positioned in the same quarter of the draw as top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka, who was scheduled to play Ann Li later on Wednesday for a spot in the final 16.[S1]

In other second-round action, fifth seed Elina Svitolina defeated Liudmila Samsonova 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, while world No. 170 Sonay Kartal upset ninth seed Belinda Bencic 6-0, 7-5.[S1]
