A Name Change as Satire
As the animated series prepares to launch its 29th season this month, its creators have announced that the show will now be called South America. The change is a direct parody of President Donald Trump's efforts to rename landmarks, including his recent proposal to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America amid trade tensions with Canada.[S1]
In a statement, Trey Parker and Matt Stone said they were inspired by the 'bravery and patriotism' of Apple and Google, which agreed to update their map applications to reflect the president's renaming. They also thanked their parent company Paramount, sarcastically referring to it as 'a Skydance Capitulation.'[S1]
Premiere Details and Recent Emmy Win
The announcement comes shortly after the show won an Emmy for animated program over the weekend. The new season will premiere on Comedy Central at 10 p.m. ET on Sept. 16, with episodes available for streaming the following day on Paramount+.[S1]
