Premiere Ratings and Demographic Gains
Across Comedy Central and Paramount+ in the U.S., the Season 29 opener of the show now called South America drew 4.2 million viewers during its first three days. That is roughly level with the prior season's debut, which pulled 4.3 million in the same span. Among adults 18-49, though, the episode improved sharply, earning a 0.97 rating — 33% above Season 28's 0.73 — and a 4.77 share, up 20% from 3.96 a year earlier. Excluding sports, it ranked as the week's top cable telecast in that demo from Monday through Friday.[S1]
Social Media Impact and Creator Statement
The rename to South America, a jab at Donald Trump's efforts to rename major landmarks, sparked heavy online discussion. On premiere day, the series was the top social cable comedy, and within three days it generated 11 million views and one million engagements. It also amassed 63,000 online mentions in that period, a 40% rise over what the Season 28 premiere achieved in the same timeframe. Earlier in the month, creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone explained the change in a statement, saying they were inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, and thanking parent company Paramount, which they referred to as a Skydance Capitulation.[S1]
