Defending champion pulls out of Beijing
Jannik Sinner has confirmed he will not compete at the China Open 2026, pushing back his return to professional tennis once more. The 25-year-old has been absent from the tour since he successfully defended his Wimbledon title in July, sitting out multiple Masters tournaments and the US Open because of a knee injury. His withdrawal means the defending champion will not be in the draw in Beijing.[S1]
In a video shared on social media, Sinner explained that his knee has not recovered to the level he needs and that he does not yet feel ready to play competitively. He said he would do everything he could to get back on court as soon as possible. He also described his past success in Beijing fondly, noting he had enjoyed winning the title there last year, and said he was disappointed not to defend it while looking forward to returning in 2027.[S1]
Sinner enters the China Open as the reigning champion, having beaten American Learner Tien in straight sets in the final. His continued absence leaves the tournament without its titleholder and adds another gap to a season already disrupted by the knee problem.[S1]
