Sinner Shuts Down 2026 Campaign
Jannik Sinner, the top-ranked men's tennis player, announced on Tuesday that he will not compete again in 2026 as he addresses an injured right knee. In a video message posted to Instagram, Sinner explained that he and his doctors concluded he needs a course of treatment, which means his season is officially finished. He added that he must consider his long-term career and will do everything possible to return at full strength.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5][S6][S7][S8]
Sinner has been sidelined since July, when he defeated Alexander Zverev in the Wimbledon final. He then withdrew from the U.S. Open because of the right knee problem. His management team said in a statement that, on the advice of his medical staff, he will follow a treatment plan for knee inflammation, with the decision made now to give him time to recover before preparing for 2027.[S1]
Tournaments Lost and Ranking at Risk
The early shutdown means Sinner will miss several major events. He had already pulled out of the Shanghai Masters, and he will now also be absent from the Paris Masters and the ATP Finals in November. In addition, he will not be able to represent Italy, the host and three-time defending champion, in the Davis Cup Final 8. While he is out, Sinner risks losing his No. 1 ranking.[S1]
If Sinner recovers in time for the start of next year, he could return at the Australian Open, the next Grand Slam, which begins on January 17. The 25-year-old has won five Grand Slam titles and earlier this year put together a 30-match winning streak before a second-round loss at the French Open during a Paris heat wave.[S1]
Rivals and the Wider Tour
Sinner's main rival, Carlos Alcaraz, also missed four and a half months this year because of a right wrist injury. Meanwhile, Alexander Zverev has claimed two of the four Grand Slam titles and is closing in on the No. 1 ranking. Their performances while Sinner is away will determine how the top of the men's game shifts.[S1]
