The accident and initial response
In the town of Fernández Oro, in the Alto Valle of Río Negro, a four-year-old boy was being intensely searched this Saturday after the car in which he was traveling with his parents lost control and fell into an irrigation canal near the Puente de Hierro area. The couple managed to reach the surface on their own, but the child remained trapped in the vehicle and was dragged by the current, triggering a vast search operation that lasted all day.[S1]
The incident occurred near kilometer 1209 of Route 22, in an area of farms surrounded by dirt roads and grasslands that made access difficult for rescue teams. For reasons still under investigation, the driver lost control of the vehicle and fell into the canal. The operation began in the dark, around 4:30 a.m., with the vehicle partially submerged among the vegetation of the watercourse, reported AN Allen. From that first moment, the geographical characteristics of the area complicated the search efforts.[S1]
Challenging search conditions
The communication area of the Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed to Diario Río Negro that the operation began during the early hours of Saturday. Since then, the Río Negro Police, Naval Prefecture, Civil Defense, firefighters, and divers have been working together on a water front that extends from the point of the fall to the mouth of the river, approximately three kilometers away.[S1]
From Police Station 26 of Fernández Oro, they described to the same media the scenario faced by rescuers: they searched from the area where the vehicle fell to the river mouth, about three kilometers. It is a very narrow sector with much vegetation and full of bottles, plastic, pieces of mattresses, vehicle seats, etc. The turbid water, branches obstructing the passage, and the narrowness of the channel added obstacles along the way. Police sources told LM Cipolletti that there are stretches of three or four thousand meters where the channel is very narrow and full of branches, which makes it difficult, added to the fact that the water is very murky.[S1]

Ongoing efforts and community vigil
Despite the sustained deployment, hours passed without results. The commissioner of Sectional 26 of Fernández Oro, Miguel Elifonso, confirmed to the Cipoleño media that despite the search, they have not yet found the child. Divers advanced in stretches of a thousand meters, rested, and dived again until reaching the river drain. Kayaks toured the banks and a search drone flew over the vegetation from the air looking for any clue.[S1]
To gain ground, the operation personnel, together with the municipality of Fernández Oro, arranged the arrival of a backhoe and other machines to divert part of the flow towards a nearby lagoon. The goal is to lower the level and pressure of the water to improve visibility and allow rescuers to access areas that, with normal flow, are impossible to inspect. They are trying to divert the course of the drain so that the pressure and height decrease and they can have a better view and pass the drones, they explained to the same media.[S1]
The search scenario is located past the first iron bridge towards the interior, about a thousand meters from the road. It is a rural environment where silence is only interrupted by the sound of machinery and the drone's buzz. On the edge of the canal, family members and neighbors keep a vigil next to the child's parents, waiting for news. In the afternoon, authorities informed Diario Río Negro that the work would continue until late Saturday and resume on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. Additional personnel have already been called to reinforce the intervention during the second day. They warned that the canal has a lot of garbage and branches, so the operational outlook for the coming hours maintains the same adverse conditions that have marked the search from the beginning.[S1]
