A straight-sets win that settles the ranking

Elena Rybakina will end 2026 as the top-ranked woman in tennis after defeating Yulia Putintseva, another player representing Kazakhstan, 6-2, 6-3 in the last 16 of the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. The result left Aryna Sabalenka, ranked second, unable to close the gap with the season's remaining events. Rybakina had entered the WTA 500 tournament with a first-round bye and stepped onto court at the Ariake Coliseum fresh from taking the Ningbo Open title in China, her fourth trophy of the year and her first while holding the top spot.[S1][S2][S3]

The Tokyo match was decided in large part by Rybakina's serve and aggression: she struck six aces and recorded 25 winners against her compatriot. The win arrived more than a week before the season-ending WTA Finals, giving her the year-end honour with time to spare. She becomes the 17th woman in WTA history to close a season at No. 1, a list that also includes Steffi Graf, Serena Williams, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Justine Henin, Iga Swiatek and Sabalenka.[S1][S2][S3]

Two majors and a first stint at the summit

The 27-year-old has put together a standout campaign, winning the Australian Open and the US Open to raise her Grand Slam count to three, having first won Wimbledon in 2022. She also collected titles in Stuttgart and Ningbo, bringing her total for the season to four. Her run to the top of the rankings began in September, when a quarter-final win over China's Zheng Qinwen at the US Open ensured she would take the No. 1 position for the first time, and she went on to lift the trophy in New York.[S1][S2][S3]

The year has included difficult stretches. After her US Open success she lost her opening match in Beijing and then sat out the Wuhan Open with a leg problem. Earlier, she had retired injured from a Cincinnati Open quarter-final against Swiatek because of a left ankle issue that she said had troubled her for a long time, though she described it as under control. She also acknowledged that her preparation ahead of the US Open had not been good, as she could not train for much of the preceding week.[S1][S2][S3]

Fernandez rematch and the road to Indian Wells

Rybakina's next opponent in Tokyo is Canada's Leylah Fernandez, who advanced by beating Elise Mertens 6-2, 7-6(8). The quarter-final is a replay of the Ningbo Open final, which Rybakina won 6-2, 6-2. Fernandez is a former US Open runner-up. Rybakina is chasing a 16th career title in Tokyo before turning to the WTA Finals, where the season's eight leading players will compete in Indian Wells, California, from 8 to 15 November. She will be defending her singles title there, having beaten Sabalenka in last year's final.[S1][S2][S3]
