Fernandez Grinds Past Bouzkova in Straight Sets

Leylah Fernandez secured her place in the Ningbo Open final by defeating Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 7-5 in Saturday's semifinal. The Montreal native, ranked 30th, produced 27 winners and won 46 receiving points across the match, according to the two outlets. She also landed three aces and converted eight of her 18 break-point chances.[S1][S2]

Fernandez described the performance as solid rather than flawless, noting she made more errors than she would have liked but attributed part of that to semifinal nerves. She said she was pleased to handle the pressure and raise her level at the moments that counted, in front of a supportive crowd. She also credited Bouzkova's consistency on both wings and explained that she tried to lean on her own variety and take the offensive whenever possible.[S2]

The win followed a demanding path through the draw. Fernandez had already come through three-set battles against Elise Mertens, Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Ekaterina Alexandrova, and she has now won 13 of her past 16 matches. Her run in Singapore last month delivered her sixth career title, and she is now through to the tenth final of her career.[S2]

Rybakina Stands Between Fernandez and Another Title

Elena Rybakina, the top seed and defending champion, advanced by beating Diana Shnaider 6-3, 7-5 in the second semifinal. The 27-year-old struck six aces but struggled on serve, needing 11 set points to close the opening set in a match that included 11 double-faults between the two players. Rybakina said the game was important and unusually long, that her serve gave her trouble and that she was relieved the set ultimately went her way.[S1][S2]

Rybakina's 2026 record stands at a WTA-best 52-14, and she arrives in the final having won the Australian Open, Stuttgart and the US Open this season. Sunday's match will be the 28th final of her career, and she is seeking a 15th singles title and a fourth championship of the year. She is also unbeaten in Ningbo, holding a 7-0 lifetime mark at the event.[S1][S2]

The head-to-head favors Rybakina at 3-2, and their most recent encounter was a tight three-setter in the Stuttgart quarterfinals last spring. Fernandez, the 2021 US Open finalist, will need to solve the reigning US Open champion to claim what would be her seventh career title.[S1][S2]
