Tampa Bay Closes Out Cleveland in Six Games
The Tampa Bay Rays secured the American League Championship Series on Monday night, downing the Cleveland Guardians 7-3 in Game 6 at Tropicana Field to take the series 4-2. The victory sends Tampa Bay to the World Series, where Milwaukee awaits beginning Friday night in Milwaukee. Junior Caminero and Yandy Díaz both connected for two-run homers in the clincher, and Freddy Peralta worked 5-1/3 innings while surrendering a single run on five hits.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5][S6][S7]
Tampa Bay seized control early, plating two runs in the second inning on Richie Palacios' two-run double, and finished the job with closer Bryan Baker on the mound. Cleveland refused to fold: in the eighth, with two runs already in, the Guardians loaded the bases and brought the potential go-ahead run to the plate before Kevin Kelly struck out Brayan Rocchio to end the threat. The evening fell on the 18-year anniversary of the franchise's first AL pennant, won in 2008.[S1]
A Third Trip to the Fall Classic
This marks Tampa Bay's third World Series appearance across 29 seasons. The Rays fell to the Philadelphia Phillies in five games in 2008 and lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games during the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign. Neither Tampa Bay nor Milwaukee has ever claimed a title, making this the first World Series in which both participants are seeking their first championship since 1980, when Philadelphia defeated the Kansas City Royals.[S1]
For Cleveland, the defeat pushes a championship drought to 78 years. The Guardians have not won the American League pennant since 2016, when they dropped the World Series to the Chicago Cubs, and have not taken the title since 1948. Tampa Bay reached this point after sweeping the New York Yankees in the Division Series, then trailing the Guardians by 0-1 and 1-2 in this series before winning three straight games.[S1]
A Stadium Restored, a Season Rebuilt
A sellout crowd of 40,230 filled Tropicana Field, waving yellow-and-blue rally towels, ringing cowbells and chanting for the Rays throughout the night. The ballpark had required major renovations after Hurricane Milton tore off its roof two years ago and caused damage across the stadium. Tampa Bay played its 2025 home schedule across the bay in Tampa at the New York Yankees' spring training complex, welcomed new ownership before this season and locked in a new stadium deal slated to open in 2029 near the NFL's Buccaneers.[S1]
Back at the Trop, the Rays won 55 regular-season games at home, a total matched this year only by Milwaukee. Peralta earned his second win of the ALCS in his third appearance of the series, having thrown six scoreless innings to win Game 2 and recorded two outs in relief in Game 4.[S1]
