A final decided in the closing minutes
Newman secured a second consecutive URBA Top 14 Copa Macro title by edging Hindú 33-32 in a final played at Club Atlético San Isidro. The Cardenal had arrived with 24 straight matches without defeat and stretched that sequence to 25, holding off a rival that led for long stretches of a frantic contest. The match produced three yellow cards and a penalty try, and the outcome stayed uncertain until the final whistle.[S1][S2]
The ground known as the Catedral was full, and supporters of both clubs gathered around the San Isidro venue from early in the day. Gonzalo Gutiérrez Taboada put the first points on the board with a penalty, but Hindú had created the better openings and took the lead through a try from Nicolás Amaya after Pascal Senillosa broke down the right. Bautista Farise added the conversion.[S1][S2]
Yellow cards turn the first half
The match shifted in the 19th minute when Martín Cancelliere was shown a yellow card for what referee Pablo Deluca judged an intentional knock-on. Newman used the extra man to take control, scoring through Pablo Cardinal from close to the posts and then through Santiago Marolda, who finished a powerful first-phase move that began with a lineout.[S1][S2]
Newman also lost Simón Prince to a knee injury and had Lucas Marguery sent to the sin bin, and Hindú made the most of the numerical advantage. On the stroke of half-time Sebastián Cancelliere scored and Farise converted, leaving the interval score at 20-17 in Newman's favour.[S1][S2]
A penalty try and a kick against the post
Early in the second half Gutiérrez Taboada landed another penalty and was then yellow-carded for a high tackle on Farise as the Hindú back was grounding the ball. The offence produced a penalty try, and Martín Cancelliere soon added another try after a move that covered the length of the field and involved his brother, putting Hindú 32-26 ahead.[S1][S2]
Marolda, who had taken over the kicking duties, scored again in the 23rd minute of the second half and Gutiérrez Taboada converted to restore Newman's lead. Farise then struck the left post with a penalty that could have put Hindú back in front, and in the 43rd minute Senillosa was forced into touch on the right, sparking the celebrations.[S1][S2]
What comes next for the champions
Beyond the URBA title, Newman will defend the Torneo Nacional de Clubes crown on 21 November at 19:40 against El Talar de Córdoba, playing away from home.[S2]
