Netflix Pulls the Plug on Ransom Canyon
Netflix will not move forward with a third installment of Ransom Canyon, the Texas-set romantic drama headlined by Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly. The cancellation arrived roughly six weeks after Season 2 premiered on July 23. Based on Jodi Thomas' novels, the show had been living on the edge: Season 1 drew decent but unspectacular numbers, prompting a late renewal that trimmed the episode count and brought behind-the-scenes changes.[S1]
The second season drew fewer viewers than the first, collecting 4.1 million views during its opening week, a 43% drop from the 7.2 million the 2025 debut managed. The show did push Season 1 back into Netflix's weekly Top 10 briefly, yet the new batch of episodes exited that ranking after just three weeks, while Season 1 had lasted four. Given Netflix's habit of weighing expense against results, those numbers probably weren't sufficient to justify another season of a costly series anchored by big-name stars.[S1]
A Look Back at the Series and Its Legacy
At the center of Ransom Canyon are Staten Kirkland (Duhamel) and Quinn O'Grady (Kelly), former childhood companions whose romance is repeatedly mistimed. During Season 2, Quinn accepted a proposal from another man, yet the finale left the pair happily united, a reversal from the Season 1 closer that had them parting ways. The Season 2 ending avoided shocking cliffhangers, offering some comfort to viewers who had followed the show and its characters across two seasons. It did, however, plant the seeds of a love triangle involving Ellie (Marianly Tejada) and hinted at a bigger Season 3 role for Staten's half-brother Levi, portrayed by Steve Howey.[S1]
Ransom Canyon will also be recalled for Kelly's insistence on equal pay with Duhamel when she was cast as his co-lead in 2022. That was a daring request during an industry contraction following the pandemic and the peak-TV boom, yet it succeeded: she didn't secure full parity but came near it, and she thanked Netflix for how it handled her ask. Season 2 finds the show's namesake Texas town in jeopardy as ranching families fracture, romantic loyalties shift, and the survival of a small-town way of life rooted in ranching and agriculture is questioned.
