Medical report points to clear improvement
Mirtha Legrand remains hospitalized at Mater Dei Sanatorium in Buenos Aires, where doctors reported Wednesday that she is doing very well in her recovery from the lung condition that led to her admission. The medical report, signed by the institution's medical director, Enrique Echagüe, said the 99-year-old host is in clear improvement and has been moved to a standard room, where she is accompanied by her family. Her relatives used the statement to thank the public for its ongoing displays of affection.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5]
The sanatorium said it will issue a new medical report on Friday unless there are changes in her condition. The previous update, released Monday, had reported favorable progress and the end of antibiotic treatment. That document also anticipated Wednesday's report if no modifications occurred. Legrand has been under observation since September 18, when she was readmitted for a condition compatible with lung disease after a prior discharge.[S1][S2][S3][S5]
A September of two hospitalizations
Legrand's first September admission stemmed from a flu-like illness that developed into bronchitis. She entered the sanatorium for tests and care, and was discharged on Sunday, September 13, continuing her recovery at her home on Avenida del Libertador. The following Friday, a respiratory decompensation prompted her return to Mater Dei. Since then, the institution has reported favorable evolution while extending her stay to complete recovery and lower the risk of relapse. On Friday, September 25, a report said she was doing very well with her respiratory condition and was increasing physical activity with the kinesiology team.[S1][S2][S5]
During this hospitalization, Legrand has received visits from her daughter Marcela Tinayre and her grandchildren Juana Viale and Nacho Viale. Her great-granddaughter Ámbar de Benedictis also stopped by the sanatorium on San Martín de Tours street. Family members accompanied the host at different times during these days of medical care. The medical team continues to monitor her clinical evolution and define the next steps in her care.[S1]
Television absence and what lung disease means
Legrand's absence has been felt on El Trece. Her last broadcast at the helm of La noche de Mirtha aired on August 29. Since then, Juana has taken over the Saturday program and the Sunday lunches. On Saturday, September 27, Juana spoke about her grandmother's health during the opening of her show, saying she was improving very well and sending her a big kiss because she does not miss the program. In another on-air segment, Juana said Legrand was following the broadcasts from the clinic and joked about her grandmother's attention to every detail.[S1]
The term lung disease is a general medical phrase for conditions affecting the lungs. It does not identify a specific pathology and is not synonymous with pneumonia. The Royal Spanish Academy dictionary defines it as a disease of the lungs. According to the U.S. National Cancer Institute, pulmonary diseases include asthma, COPD, pulmonary fibrosis and pneumonia, among others. Causes can vary: some lung diseases may be linked to infections, while others often appear due to smoking, inhalation of certain substances or constant exposure to environmental pollutants. Symptoms depend mainly on the underlying lung problem and can include cough, difficulty breathing, rapid breathing or fatigue.[S3][S5]
