What happened at the range
Michael Mann, the director known for crime thrillers such as Heat and Collateral, accidentally shot himself in the leg on Saturday at a shooting range in Los Angeles, according to a statement issued by his representative. The representative said a weapon went off while it was holstered, leaving the filmmaker with a superficial wound, and that he received treatment and was being released.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5][S6][S7][S8]
The accident took place around 4 p.m. at the Range LA while Mann, 83, was practicing target shooting, TMZ reported first. Police and paramedics were called, and Mann was transported to a hospital by ambulance. A person familiar with the circumstances described the injury as minor and subcutaneous, and noted that the director has spent decades as an experienced target shooter.[S1]
A career built on precise gunplay
Mann is recognized for meticulous preparation and for staging gun violence with unusual realism. The most cited example is the downtown Los Angeles bank robbery shootout in Heat, where the heavily armed crew played by Robert De Niro and Val Kilmer trades fire with police in the street. The director is now developing a sequel to that film, with shooting expected to start early next year.[S1]
Before Heat, Mann helped shape the visual and tonal identity of the 1980s television series Miami Vice as executive producer, and he later directed a 2006 feature adaptation of the show. His filmography also includes Thief (1981), The Last of the Mohicans (1992), The Insider (1999), which drew seven Academy Award nominations, Ali (2001) and Ferrari (2023).[S1]
