A quarter-century of costumes
Heidi Klum has marked the 25th edition of her annual Halloween party, appearing this year as a realistic severed human hand. The supermodel has built a reputation for costumes that go well beyond ordinary dressing up, and the milestone event kept that pattern going.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5][S6][S7][S8]
Her previous year's choice was Medusa, the monster of Greek myth, complete with a headpiece of writhing snakes and a trailing tail. Her husband, Tom Kaulitz, attended as an ancient Greek soldier whom she had supposedly turned to stone. Klum told Variety that 15 artists worked together to build that costume.[S1]
Craft over quick change
Klum framed the elaborate outfits as a craft worth preserving, arguing that people are still needed to create memorable moments with real people, and calling the result a kind of art. She also acknowledged the short life of each creation, explaining that the look serves only for the evening and comes apart in the shower afterward.[S1]
Her costume history mixes fictional characters and creatures. She has appeared as E.T., as Fiona from Shrek, as Jessica Rabbit and as the werewolf from Michael Jackson's Thriller, and has also taken the forms of a peacock, a worm and a butterfly.[S1]
Beyond the party
Klum served as host of Project Runway's 22nd season earlier in the year, sitting on the judging panel with Nina Garcia and Law Roach. She came back to the fashion competition last year following a 2018 departure; prior to that, she had led 16 seasons of the show, beginning with its 2004 debut on Bravo.[S1]
With Tim Gunn, Klum also created a separate fashion competition, Making the Cut, for Prime Video in 2020. That show ran for three seasons.[S1]
