A death announced by his wife

Kevin Bleyer, a writer on The Daily Show, died in a car crash on Sunday, according to a statement his wife posted on Instagram. He was 54 years old. Nella Vera described herself as devastated, heartbroken and shattered, and said his death had left a hole in her heart that would never be filled. She shared the words alongside a photograph of him.[S1]

Coverage of the death appeared across several outlets, which identified Bleyer as a Daily Show writer and, in some cases, as a speechwriter for Barack Obama. The reports placed his age at 54 and attributed the fatality to a vehicle accident.[S2][S3][S4]

A rural road in Pennsylvania

The crash took place on a rural road in Millrift, Pennsylvania, Bleyer's family told Variety. He kept a home in that area. Millrift is a small community in the northeastern corner of the state.[S1]

Nine years with Jon Stewart and four Emmys

Bleyer spent nine years working on The Daily Show alongside Jon Stewart. Before that he put in another eight years as a writer on Politically Incorrect, the program hosted by Bill Maher and later by Dennis Miller. His work earned four Primetime Emmy Awards, a Writers Guild Award and a Peabody Award.[S1]

Beyond television comedy, Bleyer wrote speeches for then-President Barack Obama and for then-New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, among other clients. He was also the author of books and plays. He studied at Stanford University.[S1]

Work from Nairobi to Bishkek

Bleyer's career extended well past the United States. He worked in countries including Kenya, Jordan and Moldova, and for a time lived in Kyrgyzstan, where he served as executive producer of Studio 7, described on his official website as the first political satire news program in Central Asia. His website also lists writing and producing credits with NBC News' TODAY show and with CNN.[S1]

He met Vera in 2010 during a Public Theater production of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson. The two became close quickly, she wrote, drawn together by a mutual enthusiasm for political comedy. They started dating in 2015 and married in June 2025.[S1]

Vera recalled eleven years together that included difficulties but were above all full of love, laughter, dogs and travel. She wrote that she admired his mind, was dazzled by his humor, amazed by his courage and adventurousness, and moved by his warm heart. She asked that donations in his memory go to the Alzheimer's Association New York City chapter, where she said he had volunteered. She acknowledged his many public achievements over a long career but said that to her he was a soulmate, a partner in mischief and the person who made life far more enjoyable.[S1]
