Reeves signs on for an animated origin story
Keanu Reeves has finalized an agreement to voice John Wick once more, this time in an animated prequel feature that Lionsgate is developing about the assassin's early history. The project revisits the character's origins rather than continuing his present-day story, and it marks the first time the series moves into animation as a feature format.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5][S6][S7][S8]
The narrative centers on the Impossible Task, the feat Wick is said to have accomplished by eliminating all of his rivals within a single night. Completing it released him from his debt to the High Table and secured his freedom to build a life with Helen, the woman he loved. The films previously referred to this episode without depicting it.[S1]
Tindle directs, with the franchise's producers returning
Shannon Tindle, an animation filmmaker known for the Netflix release Ultraman: Rising and for Kubo and the Two Strings, will direct. Ryan and Kaz Firpo wrote the screenplay. The producing group includes Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of Thunder Road, Chad Stahelski of 87Eleven Entertainment, and Reeves himself, with Point Grey joining the feature.[S1][S5]
When the animated project was first announced in 2025, Lionsgate motion picture chair Adam Fogelson described animation and the John Wick universe as offering limitless possibilities, and said no part of the mythology had drawn more fan demand than the Impossible Task. He praised Tindle's approach to the material and expressed enthusiasm for what the character could do in the medium.[S1]
A billion-dollar series keeps expanding
Across five films, including the Ana de Armas-led spinoff Ballerina, the John Wick series has taken in more than $1 billion worldwide. The franchise follows the title hitman in his ongoing conflict with the High Table, the powerful organization that governs his world. Lionsgate is also developing a fifth live-action installment and a separate film built around Caine, the blind assassin played by Donnie Yen.[S1]
