Gunn confirms next script in progress
Through a post on Threads, James Gunn shared that he is currently in the middle of writing his next movie, doing so ahead of Superman: Man of Tomorrow's July 9, 2027 theatrical debut. Asked by a commenter if he felt ready to begin penning another film, Gunn answered that he was already at work on it, explaining he needed an activity while awaiting the assembly. On that same platform, he verified that the assembly cut for Superman: Man of Tomorrow has been finished. He had earlier confirmed in August that shooting on the superhero title had concluded.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5]
Superman sequel details and returning cast
Man of Tomorrow continues the story told in 2025's Superman, and David Corenswet once again takes on the role of the Man of Steel. This time, Superman must join forces with his longtime foe Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, to face a greater danger: the hyper-intelligent villain Brainiac, brought to life by Lars Eidinger. Rachel Brosnahan reprises Lois Lane. Also returning are Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific. Milly Alcock, seen briefly as Superman's cousin Kara Zor-El, comes back for Man of Tomorrow following her lead role in this summer's DC release Supergirl. Aaron Pierre joins the sequel as John Stewart, a character first appearing in the HBO Max show Lanterns.[S1]
Gunn's role at DC Studios
Beyond writing and directing the Superman movies, Gunn has co-led DC Studios with Peter Safran since 2022. Speaking to Variety in January, Gunn praised his partner as the best, noting Safran handles the tasks Gunn himself is not skilled at. According to Gunn, Safran steadies the operation, keeps the team on the same page, links them with Jim Lee and the comics division, and brings together departments that previously worked apart. Gunn also said the two of them genuinely care about these characters and recognize the honor of influencing how audiences perceive them, a duty they treat with seriousness.[S1]
