Viera Takes the Helm

Jadson Viera, the former coach of Montevideo's Nacional, signed his contract on Saturday to become the new manager of Club Atlético Independiente, the Argentine club announced. The 45-year-old, who turned 45 on August 4, replaces Gustavo Quinteros, who was dismissed last Thursday after the team's poor performance. Viera, born in southern Brazil and naturalized Uruguayan, played as a defender from 2001 for clubs including Danubio, Atlante, Lanús, and Vasco da Gama before retiring in 2017.[S1]

According to Argentine media, Viera's contract is for one year with a release clause at the end of this year, considering that club elections are scheduled for October and a new administration will take over in December. The current board aims to avoid committing financially to a future management, while Viera will have these months to rebuild a team shaken by the 4-0 elimination against Atlético Tucumán in the Copa Argentina and Quinteros's departure.[S1][S5]

A Career Built in Uruguay

Viera began his coaching career as an assistant to Alexander 'Cacique' Medina, working at Nacional, Talleres, Internacional, and Vélez, reaching the Copa Libertadores semifinals in 2022. His first head coaching role was at Boston River in late 2023, where he led the club to a third-place finish in 2024 and qualification for the Copa Libertadores. He then moved to Nacional in October 2025, winning the Uruguayan Championship and the Annual Table, but left in March 2026 after a poor start to the season.[S3][S5]

During his time at Boston River, Viera faced Independiente in the Copa Sudamericana group stage, losing 2-1 in Avellaneda and 5-1 in Montevideo. He also has Argentine football experience as a player, having been part of the Lanús squad that won the 2007 Apertura, the club's first Primera División title. He played for Lanús between 2007 and 2010.[S4][S5]

Immediate Challenges

Viera will not be on the bench for Monday's match against Lanús; instead, Carlos Matheu and Eduardo Tuzzio, the reserve team coaches, will lead the team temporarily. Viera will officially take charge on Tuesday. The club's decision to appoint Viera came after considering other candidates like Rubén Darío Insua and Omar De Felippe, but the need for a consensus choice in an electoral year favored Viera.[S5][S6]

Quinteros, who had taken over on September 19, 2025, managed 32 official matches with 14 wins, 8 draws, and 10 losses. After the Copa Argentina defeat, he stated that neither the players nor the coaching staff were responsible for a continued run of failures at a club that has not won titles in years, and he criticized the lack of promised signings. Viera now faces the challenge of reviving the team's fortunes.[S1]
