Gill and Rohit dismantle 406
India pulled off their highest successful ODI chase and the second-highest in ODI history, overhauling West Indies' 405 for seven with 39 balls to spare in Guwahati on Wednesday. Shubman Gill finished unbeaten on 223 from 133 balls, the fastest double hundred in 50-over cricket, while Rohit Sharma made 101 from 75 deliveries. The opening pair added 255 runs in 26.2 overs as India reached 406 for two in 43.3 overs.[S1][S2]
Gill's 223 came off 133 balls with 26 fours and eight sixes, and his century arrived in just 62 balls, his fastest in the format. Rohit's 101 was his 35th ODI hundred and his second-fastest, and during the innings he became the seventh batter and third Indian to reach 12,000 ODI runs, joining Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. The stand ended when Rohit fell, but India needed only 151 from 24 overs at that point.[S1][S2][S3]
India raced past 100 inside 12 overs and reached 200 without loss in the 22nd over, the first time an opening pair had done so in an ODI chase of a 350-plus target. The 255-run partnership was India's second-highest opening stand in ODI history and their highest in a successful chase, surpassing Rohit and Shikhar Dhawan's 210 against Pakistan in the 2018 Asia Cup. India's previous best chase was 362 for one against Australia in Jaipur in 2013.[S1][S3]
West Indies centuries set 405
Sent in to bat, West Indies posted 405 for seven, their highest ODI total, surpassing their previous best of 389 against England in 2019. John Campbell made 101 from 68 balls, Shai Hope 104 from 94 balls and Amir Jangoo 114 from 77 balls, the first time West Indies produced three centuries in an ODI. Hope was dropped on 27 by Virat Kohli at short midwicket before going on to his hundred.[S1][S2]
India's inexperienced pace attack struggled on a flat pitch. Auqib Nabi, the third cricketer from the Valley to represent India, conceded 84 runs in 8.5 overs. Gurnoor Brar returned 2/96, Prasidh Krishna 1/45 from five overs. Kuldeep Yadav claimed 2/65 to enter the 200-wicket club in ODIs, and Ravindra Jadeja finished with 2/75. Batting all-rounder Naman Dhir twisted his ankle and left the field in the 36th over after bowling 6.1 overs.[S1]
