High-Stakes Review Meeting
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is convening a review meeting on Thursday at its headquarters in Mumbai. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, T20I skipper Shreyas Iyer, ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and head of cricket at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) VVS Laxman are expected to attend. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia will chair the meeting, with other officials possibly joining virtually. The agenda includes India's recent series losses in England and Ireland, as well as preparations for the upcoming New Zealand tour in October-November, which features three ODIs and three T20Is. The primary focus, however, is on the roadmap to the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa. Injury Management Under Scrutiny
A key topic is the management of injured players. Several India internationals, including Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Nitish K Reddy, Washington Sundar, and B Sai Sudharsan, were initially named in squads subject to fitness clearance but missed out. Even in the 15-member squad for the upcoming T20Is against Afghanistan, four players are subject to fitness tests. This has put the CoE under scrutiny, with Saikia and Laxman previously explaining that the facility is not merely a rehab centre.[S1]
The meeting is expected to discuss at length how to ensure no communication gaps between players, the CoE, team management, and selectors. With the focus shifting to the 50-over format, the BCCI and team management will look to keep key players like Pandya and Reddy injury-free. The meeting will also discuss the future of chief selector Ajit Agarkar and former captain Rohit Sharma. Both Agarkar and Gambhir have been non-committal on Rohit's place in the ODI World Cup. Speculation in England suggested that Rohit's last ODI was at Lord's, with rumors of retirement, but the former skipper remains firm on continuing, leaving the decision to the BCCI and selection committee.[S1]
Agarkar's term ends later this month, but a possible extension might be discussed at least until the ODI World Cup next year. Agarkar has been with the team since July 2023, overseeing two T20 World Cups and an ODI World Cup.
