A one-sided night at the Norberto Tomaghello
San Lorenzo produced an alarming display in Florencio Varela, losing 3-0 to Defensa y Justicia in a round 11 fixture of the Torneo Clausura. Jeremías Lucco, David Martínez and David Barbona scored for the home side. The visiting supporters made themselves heard inside the Norberto Tomaghello stadium in a hostile atmosphere, directing loud chants at the board led by club president Marcelo Culotta, including calls for everyone to leave.[S1][S2][S3][S4][S5][S6][S7]
The Halcón struck early in Buenos Aires province through Lucco, the standout performer of the match, who beat José Devecchi in a one-on-one after a sweeping team move that began from the back line. The opening goal in the 11th minute was a key moment, and the two goals San Lorenzo conceded late in the first half landed as a further psychological blow.[S1]
In stoppage time of the first period, Barbona curled a shot towards the far post from an inverted angle and set up Martínez, whose goal stood after a VAR check. A couple of minutes later, with the San Lorenzo defence standing off, Barbona found himself alone on the penalty spot after a pass from Maximiliano Porcel and finished cleanly to land another heavy hit on the visitors.[S1]
Insua's changes come too late
Rubén Darío Insua made two changes after the break that at least pushed the Boedo side higher up the pitch and hinted at a response, bringing on Facundo Gulli and Matías Reali. It was too late, however, because the scoreline did not change, and had Defensa pressed harder the match could have ended with an even wider margin.[S1]
What the result means for both clubs
With the win, Defensa y Justicia reclaimed second place in Zona A and strengthened its position in the playoff places for the round of 16. The club also sits in a promising spot in the annual table with a view to a place in the 2027 Copa Sudamericana, one point behind Estudiantes de La Plata, who currently hold the last qualifying berth, with round 11 still to be completed.[S1]
San Lorenzo are now practically out of the running for international competitions next year and their hopes of reaching the playoffs are growing slimmer by the round: they sit five points behind Lanús and Newell's, seventh and eighth, who meet in Rosario. The team has won only three Clausura matches, all at home and all by 1-0, against Gimnasia de Mendoza, Unión and Talleres, and has already been eliminated from the Copa Argentina, going out on penalties to Riestra in the round of 32.[S1]
