Bankruptcy forces sale of career memorabilia
Lawrence Dallaglio, who captained England and was a key figure in the team that won the 2003 Rugby World Cup, has been declared bankrupt and is selling his winner's medal from that tournament. The 54-year-old has placed a collection of items from his playing career up for auction, including medals, trophies and caps. The World Cup medal alone is expected to bring in between £50,000 and £80,000, while the entire collection has been valued at approximately £180,000.[S1]
Among the other lots are a British and Irish Lions cap, his winner's medal from the 1993 World Cup Sevens and a winner's medal from the 2003 Six Nations Championship. Dallaglio speaks about divorce and financial troubles
Speaking earlier this month on The High Performance podcast, Dallaglio attributed his bankruptcy to his divorce. He acknowledged that he had encountered financial difficulties and said he could have handled things much better. He also revealed that he sought therapy after his divorce and bankruptcy left him feeling consumed by self-pity.[S1]
The auction is scheduled to take place at Budd's in Northamptonshire on 13 October. The sale will see the physical reminders of Dallaglio's career pass to new owners, a development that follows his public discussion of the personal and financial challenges he has faced since retiring from the sport.[S1]
